Low-Carbon Hydrogen

Technology

Production process

FertigHy’s first plant will produce 500,000 tons annually of CAN-27 (Calcium Ammonium Nitrate 27%). The production of this fertilizer is conventionally done using natural gas through the Haber-Bosch process, which involves Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) and generates significant CO₂ emissions. FertigHy aims to reduce this carbon footprint and eliminate dependence on natural gas by leveraging low-carbon hydrogen technology. While the Haber-Bosch process will still be used for ammonia synthesis, FertigHy will transform hydrogen production by using low-carbon electricity to power electrolyzers, which split water into hydrogen and oxygen without producing CO₂ emissions.

Downstream of the innovative hydrogen production process, the subsequent units—including ammonia synthesis, nitric acid production, ammonium nitrate manufacturing, and CAN-27 production—utilize well-established and industry-proven technologies with a long history of reliable operation.

Key benefits of low-carbon hydrogen

Cleaner Hydrogen Production

Utilizing electrolysis with clean energy eliminates the need for natural gas, thereby avoiding the CO₂ emissions associated with traditional hydrogen production. This transition leads to the creation of ammonia with a minimal carbon footprint, aligning with global efforts to mitigate climate change.

Decarbonized Ammonia

By integrating low-carbon hydrogen into the Haber-Bosch process, the resulting ammonia will be produced in a way that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. This shift represents a major advancement in producing low-carbon fertilizers, supporting broader sustainability goals.

Sustainable Energy Use

By sourcing electricity from renewable and clean energy sources, we ensure that our hydrogen production is environmentally friendly. This approach not only reduces emissions but also supports the transition to a cleaner energy grid.

Reduced Dependency on Fossil Fuels

Replacing natural gas with low-carbon electricity for hydrogen production decreases our reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable energy system.
